PLAN OF THE PROPOSED DEGREE IN SOCIAL SCIENCES

Intermediate Stage

Three compulsory subjects to be taken for two years. :

English.

Mathematics, including Statistical Method in the

second year.

conomics.

Two compulsory subjects to be taken in one year :

History, Geography.

These two may be pursued for a further year or the students may take French or Chinese in their second year.

In the final stage (two years) the following subjects :

Economics and Applied Statistics for two years. Social History weighted towards Economic History

of England, America and the Pacific area.

(a) Political Institutions and Public Law; (b) A comparative study of Social Institutions; or (c) Social Philosophy based on the comparative

studies of Western and Chinese texts,

including ethical texts; or

(d) Psychology.

In any one of these the legal aspect to be dealt with by lecturer in law.

Diploma in Social Studies

Post-graduate, but not confined to graduates in Social Intended for the training of social workers.

Science.

Government as illustrated by the local Municipal

Government and its procedure with special emphasis on administration.

Contemporary social conditions and problems with

historical background.

Applied Statistics, with special reference to local

field work.

Supplementary subject to be chosen to remedy omissions

in candidates' previous education, for example, Economic History, Social Philosophy.

All these to be taught and studied in co-operation with Secretariat of Chinese Affairs study of social service at hand :

Medical Hospitals and out patients.

Labour Office Factories.

Voluntary social organisation for children, aged and

other special cases.

This practical training to be regarded as the objective and main substance of this Diploma course, just as the practice of teaching is the main objective and substance of the course for training teachers
